The Ubuntu images are used to provision virtual machines with an Ubuntu Server Linux distribution pre-installed. For more information about Ubuntu, see www.ubuntu.com.

The Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 10.04 images are now deprecated and have been replaced by the Certified Canonical Ubuntu images. The [Certified Canonical Ubuntu[(/images/linux/ubuntu-certified) images are designed by Canonical to be optimized for various cloud infrastructures, including the MNX Cloud. To learn about the certified images, see [Ubuntu Certified] (/images/linux/ubuntu-certified). If you use Ubuntu as your cloud operating system, you should use the [certified images](Ubuntu Certified.html)

What's new in this image

With this image, the hostname is set according to the following rules:

  1. Use /etc/hostname if it exists and is not empty
  2. Use the hostname metadata value if it exists and is not empty
  3. Use the hostname sent from DHCP server

This provides a way to set or change the hostname from the command line using CloudAPI.

To create a machine with a given host name, create a hostname metadata key.

$ sdc-createmachine --dataset sdc:jpc:ubuntu-12.04:2.3.1 --metadata hostname=example.com

To change the hostname of an existing machine, update the metadata.

$ sdc-updatemachinemetadata -m hostname=newname.com 9ebf6fc2-xxxx-yyyy-b0ef-97d1ac055b53
$ sdc-rebootmachine 9ebf6fc2-xxxx-yyyy-b0ef-97d1ac055b53
The metadata value is used only if /etc/hostname is empty or not set.
